How to install VirtualBox Guest Additions on Debian-based Linux distributions

Here is how to install VirtualBox Guest Additions on Debian-based Linux distributions like Parrot Security OS, Kali Linux, Tails, Whonix or REMnux.

With VirtualBox Guest Additions it become possible to resize desktop while resizing the VirtualBox window or share a folder between host and guest.

Download and mount#

  • Start the VM
  • In VirtualBox window, in Devices menu, choose Insert Guest Additions CD image
  • If there are not yet here, choose Download and Insert
  • Mount the CD: mount /dev/cdrom /media/

Install VirtualBox Guest Additions#

Open a terminal and as root write:

apt-get install build-essential dkms linux-headers-`uname -r`
cd /media/
./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

And then restart: shutdown -r now
